Profiting With The Engineering Profession

How can I profit from the Engineering Profession?

Engineers are given two ways profiting, they are able to craft items used by other characters, as well as gather Elemental Goods throughout Outlands and Northrend. The Gas Guide provides useful information on how an Engineer can use their profession as a Gathering Skill, as well as locations complete with maps for where you can use your Gathering Skill.

As for the ability to craft items, Engineers are often limited to providing Ranged Weapons, Scopes and Ammunition for physical DPS:

Two end-game Ranged Weapons are crafted by Engineers: Armor Plated Combat Shotgun and Nesingwary 4000. These are both great starter weapons, but are quickly upgraded in Naxxramas and Ulduar. It is not recommended you make these for Auction House selling.

Scopes always have been and always will be a profiting niche exclusive to Engineers. Allowing people to attach an enhancement to their guns, bows or crossbows, scopes come in a range of stat

Currently, Engineers produce the best Ammunition in the game. While Saronite Razorheads and Mammoth Cutters are not the best of the best for Ammunition since the release of Plans: Shatter Rounds and Plans: Iceblade Arrow, they are still going to sell well until the recipes for the Epic quality ammo are obtained. The Ammunition is very cheap to make and yields 1000x per combination. Ammunition can sometimes be difficult to sell because of the high competition and low amount of consumers: all Hunters are likely to use, and only some Warriors and Rogues - because ranged is not their primary damaging ability, they may opt for vendor sold Ammunition.

One thing to keep in mind if you have not yet chosen a specialization for Engineering: Currently, there is only a Bow which is best-in-slot for hunters and other physical dps - Zod's Repeating Longbow (link will be added once updated), there are no guns of the same item level, aside from the tank one - Bowman's Rifle of Silver Bullets. Learning towards Gnomish Engineering may turn out to be more profitable until there is a better gun released.
